It all started innocently enough, just under two years ago, in the lobby of our apartment building in Powai. I was heading out for a run when old Mr. Kulkarni, a sweet retired gentleman from the 7th floor, stopped me. He pointed a trembling finger at a flash of green and red in the gulmohar tree just outside and, with a twinkle in his eye, asked, “Beta, do you know what beautiful bird that is?” I didn’t have a clue. My knowledge of birds extended to crows, pigeons, and the occasional parrot. But Mr. Kulkarni looked so hopeful, and I, in a moment of sheer foolishness, didn’t want to disappoint him.
